What are your dreams? Your fantasies? Your ultimate wishes?
Whatever they are, you will find them all and beyond in Doctor Parnassus’ Imaginarium.
Sometimes I stumble upon films, brilliant films, that no one knows about. I find it extremely sad that movies like Scary Movie and High School Musical are known world wide when films like The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus are utterly unknown.
The first time I ever watched this film I was fifteen years old, very immature and shallow, nonetheless I highly appreciated Terry Gilliam’s resplendent work of Art. Later, when I was sixteen, I watched it again. Last night, I watched it for the third time and fell in love with it all over again!
It is certainly unusually different, unlike ordinary fantasy films; based on philosophical notions beyond the normal film plots we’re used to. However, because it is grounded in our everyday realities of money, betrayal, and desire, we can, at least I did, easily connect to it and experience Gilliam’s spark of genius!
In addition, a marvelous cast — including the legendary Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, Heath Ledger, Lily Cole, Andrew Garfield, Verne Troyer, Colin Ferrell, Jude Law, and Johnny Depp — presents a most wonderful performance, exemplifying the film’s brilliance.
The film was recognized the most for its amazing costumes, designed by Monique Prudhomme. I completely agree; the costumes add a surreal touch to the fantastic world of the Imaginarium.
I hope you find the mind of Doctor Parnassus — and Terry Gilliam — as fascinating as I did.
